There's something so scrumptious about Thiebaud's work... aside from the fact that he painted food. I love the way he uses color and form so simply. His work is a perfect example of the style of artwork I would want in my home. I love Thiebaud.

Experimenting with Limits

My usual approach to landscape painting is... well, to just have at it. This time around I thought it would be an interesting experiment to set some limits for myself. The first limit is actually a golden rule that I live by with all my paintings: paint with only the primary colors and use those to create the rest. The new limit I have created is the "paint inside the line" limit.. take a look, should be interesting:

These are some intaglio prints I made a couple semesters ago. Intaglio was my first print class I'd ever taken and it made me extremely nervous...high anxiety in the print room.

Landscape: the process

Since I'm filling up my time with studying landscapes I though I'd share with you the first part my process.

I use a gradation of grey markers to simplify what I see in front of me and then transfer this process onto a larger surface. Basically I do this so I'm not focusing on every little detail which tends to get a little muddy with paint.

Honestly I love doing marker sketches. They are extremely simple but can be quite profound in their own way...at least I think so ;)

I'm doing a series of portraits of women that I know. My main focus is the very beautiful region of the head where nape of the neck meets the hairline, just beautiful.

This portrait is in the beginning stages with only the underdrawing and underpainting completed in acrylic. I'm going to finish it with oil in color. (sorry for the all the bad quality pictures--phone camera. I'm getting a nice camera in the near future so I'll be able to document properly).

These two fellas are sketches from a book that I keep entirely of fish heads. Strange I know, but a dear professor of mine loaned me this salmon fish head and I studied it the whole semester. I named him Gary. He can be found in numerous drawings of mine and I love him because half the time people think he's a dinosaur head. I love Gary.

I've been working on landscapes lately. This an hour's worth of painting which explains the very fast and "painterly" expressions. I'll probably spend one more hour on it but not much longer because the light changes quickly outside. (the orange stuff is the undercolor, fun huh!)
